Every year there are certain traditions that we have in our family. I really love the traditions. It helps to make the holidays special. Some of the traditions are old, some are new and some are just plain fun! Mikowash is one of the oldest traditions that we have. Matt's family has celebrated Mikowash for generations. Mikowash is the Czechoslovakian St. Nicholas. On the night of December 5th, you are to set out your shoe and St. Nicholas (Mikowash) comes and delivers a little present and puts a rock in your shoe. The size of the rock you receive symbolizes how naughty you have been this year. Luckily, this year everyone got rather small pebbles in their shoes.
This year we had to delay Mikowash because Matt was out of town for a basketball tournament and I didn't want him to miss out on his family's tradition. So we pushed it back until December 8th. Mikowash delivers little presents. Nothing big, but simple and fun ones. This year the kids received a Christmas movie, M&M's, and a little Frosty the Snowman projector. Little did Mikowash know how much the kids would love the Frosty projector. They turn them on every night during bedtime. Lucas even races Frosty to sleep.

One of our newest traditions is our Elf on the Shelf, Elfie! Lucas and Macie are really getting into the spirit of Elfie. The love to look for him each morning to see what he has been up to or wear he is hiding. One of the newest pieces to Elfie this year was the nightly note to Santa about something nice Lucas did that day. Lucas really enjoyed filling out this note each night. It really highlighted the great things he was doing each day.
The hardest part about Elfie, is the fact that a 4 year old and an almost 2 year old can't touch him. This is extremely hard. He is just so adorable. We talked a lot about how if you touch Elfie, he loses a little bit of magic which makes it harder for him to fly to the North Pole to see Santa each night. So Lucas would have to tell him something nice if he did touch him, so that he was able to get his magic back. It really is fun a fun tradition and to see what Elfie does each night after reporting to Santa.

A few years ago, my friend Lori and myself have attempted to make cookies. There were a couple of years where we had to postpone the tradition. Mostly because of having very little ones around and not being able to get together. This year we brought it back. We knew it was going to be tricky. How does one make cookies while there are four children running around in all different directions while trying to bake. So we decided to come up with the easiest recipes each. I came up with 2 very simple recipes. One was one that I got from a co-worker at school (pretzel, with mini snickers, baked for 3 minutes at 350, put another pretzel on top and then sprinkle some Christmas sprinkles on top). The other one was a peanut butter fudge. Easy! Lori made a very delicious mounds bar. Which sadly enough, I never got her half of the dessert delivered to her. Sorry Lori! But I think the best part was just having the kids together and letting them play! It is very rare when we have the kids together because of life (work, basketball season, etc). They had a great time together!
Elfie even got in on the action! He couldn't wait to watch the kids cook together!
Morgan and Lucas placing the mini snickers on the pretzels. I think they may have snuck a few pieces of the chocolate.
Kenzie and Macie playing hide-and-seek! One of their favorite things to do!
Too cute!

Our final tradition that has gone back for years with my family is Elfie delivering Christmas pajamas on Christmas Eve. It has made it even more special that we now have our Elf on the Shelf, Elfie. It is just too cute that we named our Elf, Elfie to go along with the tradition. It is very magical that Elfie rings the doorbell and on the doorstep he left a note and the new pajamas. The note talked about how it is Elfie last night in the house and that he will be flying to the North Pole to help clean up the toy workshop while Santa is delivering the presents. It also let Lucas and Macie know that they definitely made it onto the Nice List.
